Dutch Labour Party

Welcome at the website of the Dutch Labour Party, PvdA (Partij van de Arbeid)

The Dutch Labour Party, PvdA (Partij van de Arbeid) is currently the largest opposition party in the Netherlands.

The PvdA was founded in 1946. It was the successor of the pre-war Social Democratic Labour Party (SDAP) which originally had been formed in 1894.

Freedom, democracy, justice, sustainability and solidarity are the ideals of Social Democracy. For the Dutch Labour Party, PvdA, the right to a decent life is a core principle - one that enables full participation in society, with room for those who wish to participate and dignity for those who cannot. A decent society is one in which freedom, solidarity and responsibility join forces. Social Democracy is a European and an international movement that fights for these ideals.

In its election programme, the PvdA proposes two national agreements. The Social Agreement  invites both employers and employees to tackle current problems of the labour market. The National Agreement is to improve our democracy.

General elections on 9 June 2010
Early elections will be held on 9 June 2010, one year ahead of schedule. Until that date the Christian Democrats and Christian Union will deal with matters in hand as a caretaker government. At the moment polls forecast that it will be very difficult to predict which party will win the elections. The social democrats, the liberals, the freedom party of Geert Wilders, the liberal democrats and the Christian democrats are all competing for the number one position. Every vote counts in June.

Leader of the Dutch Labour Party, PvdA is Job Cohen. He was elected by the PvdA congress on 25 April 2010.
